Republican Party: Openly Racist.

With each passing day the rhetoric of the Republicans are becoming more and more openly racist. They have shed all efforts to even hide their racism. This is the naked face of conservatism.

I wrote yesterday about the weasel Westmoreland who called the Obamas 'uppity'. Today the idiot stands by his assertion that he did not mean it in a racist way:

Halperin

Westmoreland, who is contemplating a 2010 run for governor, released the following statement:

"I've never heard that term used in a racially derogatory sense. It is important to note that the dictionary definition of `uppity' is `affecting an air of inflated self-esteem --- snobbish.' That's what we meant by uppity when we used it in the mill village where I grew up."

Yes congressman I am a newcomer to the south and unless your "mill village" is from a M. Night Shyamalan movie you are lying weasel.

And now we have Rep. Steve King in Iowa:

U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said Thursday that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's upbringing was devoid of patriotism or the principles that make the United States a great country.

King, who represents western Iowa and is known for making provocative statements, made a speech here asking the Iowa GOP delegation what part of Obama's upbringing, relationships and education would be appropriate for someone who wanted to be president.

"There is no part of that that I would subject a child, a young man or woman to. I don't think that there's a nurture there that shows a thread of patriotism or a sense of appreciation of free market capitalism or the destiny of America or what has made this country great," he said.

Republicans have been increasingly questioning Obama's patriotism.

This is the real Republican party. I am waiting with bated breath for some courageous journalist or TV talking-head to bring these up in front of Lindsey Graham or any other McCain surrogate. Let us make them do it:

Re: Republican Party: Openly Racist. (none / 0)

First one is of course openly racist, but I don't see it in the second one.  They questioned John Kerry's patriotism too, and questioning his upbringing isn't exactly racist since he was raised by a single white mother and his white grandparents.

Stupid, but not racist.

STOP (1.00 / 1)

The first time I heard racism links to the word "uppity" was here at mydd. You need to stop with the accusations. Not everyone has heard that words like "fairytale" and "uppity" are  considered by some to be "code" for racist words. Preaching "unity" and then making these kind on accusations with no proof is just plain wrong IMO.

Assumptions (1.00 / 1)

That's not the meaning in the dictionary.

So you're basically saying that if someone vacations in the South, they need to be prepared by being briefed on what words are politically correct and what words aren't?

Ridiculous.

Blacks were the lowest class in the south.

It's rather simple. (2.00 / 0)

Uppity, by dictionary definition, is acting above one's status and class.

Blacks in the south and in the north were considered of the lowest class.

Ergo, the word was oftenmost applied to them, and often in the context of violence. "she was acting uppity and needed to be slapped down".

If you've never read anything about the rural south, never seen Roots, never invested in anything about your cultural heritage other than enjoying some jazz. I SUGGEST YOU START.

You are a mite close to getting a trollrating here.

You are the reason blacks feel threatened and demeaned and frustrated on white liberal blogs. The fact that they call them white liberal blogs says somethin, don't it?

I know exactly what you're conflating, and it ain't right. I don't think any of Hillarys supporters were DUMB enough to use uppity to refer to Obama.

Oh, hell I asked teh google.

http://books.google.com/books?as_q=uppit y&num=10&client=firefox-a&bt nG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=& amp;as_eq=&as_brr=1&lr=&as_v t=&as_auth=&as_pub=&as_sub=& amp;as_drrb=c&as_miny=&as_maxy=& amp;as_isbn=

Find me how many of those don't regard to a black person, why don't you?

As for me, I've never ever ever ever heard that fucking word NOT used in the context of uppity nigger. It ain't exactly highfalutin'.

Re: Puhleaze! (2.00 / 0)

I don't live in the south, never have.

I know about the history of the word uppity.  It is in movies, some serious(Color Purple, Roots, Beloved, Mississippi Burning), one comedy (Blazing Saddles)

To state you don't know the meaning behind it - come on.

This isn't like the word fairytale; this is not like "macaca" where people had to look that up

Uppity is used against blacks in this country when white folks think they have gotten too big for their britches and they want to slap 'em down.

Westmoreland is old enough and intelligent enough to know he stepped in a pile of shit with that comment.

Re: STOP (2.00 / 0)

Dictionary definition aside, "uppity" essentially means someone who doesn't know their place, but should.

Who do you think that's applied to?

I'm sorry you didn't realize that had a racial undertone before MyDD, but most of us have recognized it our whole lives.  Back-woods bigots use terms like "uppity woman" and "uppity nigger" all the time.  I should know since half my family is composed of them.

I recall there were some fine gentlemen who came to my college a few times carrying signs telling us that "uppity women" were going to hell...

Depending on the context, it's either a sexist or a racist remark, but it's definitely loaded, bigoted, and derogatory.

The point isn't (2.00 / 0)

whether YOU know what it means. It's whether Westmoreland does. If you said it, ignorance would be a perfect excuse.

On the other hand, you have no basis to defend it's use by a Georgian GOP member. Your "STOP" post was misguided, unless you actually do intend to defend racist behavior.

I'm an AA, so I know quite a few terms you may not. Say someone calls me a "lazy porchmonkey".

Prove that's racist. Prove it. Prove that me calling a woman a "vindictive and emasculating" is sexist. Don't assert it, prove it.

Look, I get that overuse of racist accusations are damaging to discourse. I also get that some things are still racist and sexist, and it's equally if not more damaging to undercut any censure of those things.

There is sometimes a grey area. If you think THIS is a grey area, it's possible other people have more experience in it than you.

In reference to "lazy porchmonkey" IMO, most people think that that sounds racist.

It's a matter of how many see the term/phase as racist. IMO, "uppity" is not known by many (not wear I live.) I agree with you about "the grey area" and IMO "uppity falls into this category. This guy will not be pegged as a racist IMO, whether he is actually racist or not.

Re: Naw (none / 0)

listen there are cultural connotations of that word in the South. You say you are a latino from the east coast so I will use a different word to illustrate my point.

A few days ago I was at a party when a young woman came up to me and a bunch of my friends and asked "do you have a fag?". Now one of the people in the group was gay and he took offense. I have friends in England so I explained to him that she meant a cigarette and then I told the woman, who was Scottish, that the word fag was a inappropriate in the US.

The same goes for such words like uppity. The word has historical connotations that any person in the south knows. Westmoreland was born and brought up in Georgia and he knows it all too well. His use of the word was not code, it was intentional and mischievous and his defense in extremely disingenuous.

If Ruckus was a McCain advisor, he might say something like, "Senator, you know and I know that that boy you're running against ain't nothing but an uppity high-yellow who's learned to hide his inner nigger."

Uncle Ruckus: I've been waiting on this day since your little uppity ass came into town.
